Weather in the Whites Course

Through a partnership between the New Hampshire Community Technical College-Berlin and the Mount Washington Observatory, Professor Doyle Davis will provide resources and special information about particular weather common to the White Mountains. In four course sessions -- Friday February 24, Friday March 31, Friday April 28, and Friday June 2 -- held at the Observatory's Weather Discovery Center in North Conway, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM -- participants will learn basic meteorology with special emphasis on the weather in and around the White Mountain National Forest. A CD will be provided which will include a summary of the topics as well as a rich resource of information. Participants who participate in one or more sessions will receive a voucher for a free tour of the Mount Washington Observatory (participants are responsible for travel to and from the summit).

February: Properties of the Atmosphere, Meteorological Measurements, Weather Maps, Monitoring and Forecasting Weather, Cold Waves, Mountain Snowstorms

March: Atmospheric Stability, Methods of Heat Transfer, Solar Radiation, Freezing Precipitation and Ice Storms, Blizzards and Nor'easters

April: Wind and Weather, Forces Governing the Wind, The Development of High and Low Pressure Systems, the Jet Stream, Mountain Windstorms

June: Thunderstorms over Mountains, Hailstorms, Lighting, Downbursts, Tropical Cyclones, the Greenhouse Effect, Heat Waves, Greenhouse Warming and Global Climate Change, the Ozone Shield.
